The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
